The Indianapolis Colts are trading quarterback Carson Wentz to the Washington Commanders for a package that includes 2022 and 2023 third-round picks, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The Colts will send Wentz and a 2022 second-round pick to Washington in exchange for a 2022 second-rounder, a 2022 third-rounder, and a 2023 third-rounder that can become a second-round pick if Wentz plays more than 70% of plays during the upcoming regular season, Schefter reports.

Washington will pay Wentz’s full $28-million salary for the 2022 season, according to Schefter.

The Colts deal the 29-year-old passer just one season after acquiring him in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles. Indianapolis exchanged a 2021 third-round pick and a conditional pick that became a 2022 first-rounder for the Eagles.

Wentz struggled in the final two contests of the regular season, tossing just two touchdowns and turning the ball over twice. Indianapolis missed the playoffs after losing back-to-back games to the Las Vegas Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars to conclude the 2021 season.

The 2017 Pro Bowler led the Colts to a 9-8 mark as a starter last season. He passed for 3,563 yards, 27 touchdowns, and seven interceptions.

Wentz returns to the NFC East after spending the first five seasons of his career in Philadelphia. The former second overall pick tallied a 35-32-1 record as the Eagles’ starting signal-caller.

Washington brings in Wentz after reportedly offering multiple first-round selections to the Seattle Seahawks for Russell Wilson. Seattle reportedly preferred to trade Wilson to the AFC and dealt him to the Denver Broncos on Tuesday.

The Commanders have been active in their attempts to acquire a franchise arm in recent years, kicking the tires on Matthew Stafford last offseason before his trade to the Los Angeles Rams.

Taylor Heinicke led Washington to a 7-8 record last season following a season-ending injury to Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Meanwhile, Indianapolis once again finds itself in the market for a quarterback. The Colts are expected to be in the mix for San Francisco 49ers passer Jimmy Garoppolo, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
