The Washington Commanders and safety Landon Collins are parting ways after talks on a reworked contract failed, he told CBS Sports’ Josina Anderson.

“They asked me to take a pay cut,” Collins told Anderson. “The first one was fine. Then they asked me to take another one. The money changed after they signed Carson Wentz. I’ll just take my chances in free agency.”

Collins was in the midst of a six-year, $84-million deal. He was set to account for a $16.2-million cap hit, but his release will save Washington $6.6 million, according to ESPN’s John Keim.

A versatile defender, Collins has suited up for 35 games for Washington over the past three seasons. The majority of his work has come in the secondary, though he also moved to a hybrid safety-linebacker role last campaign.

The 28-year-old was drafted in the second round in 2015 by the New York Giants. He made three Pro Bowls over the first four years of his career but hasn’t received another invite since joining Washington in 2019.

Collins recorded two interceptions, three sacks, and 81 tackles last season.
