Auston Matthews established a new Toronto Maple Leafs record for markers in a single campaign when he scored his 55th goal of this season in the second period against the Dallas Stars on Thursday.

Matthews accomplished the feat in his 400th career game and his 66th of 2021-22. He entered the contest tied with Rick Vaive, who notched 54 with Toronto in 1981-82.

The 24-year-old wasn’t done there, as he punctuated his record-setting night with an impressive overtime winner.

Matthews set another record with that tally, as his 56th of the season moved him past Jimmy Carson (in 1987-88) and Kevin Stevens (1992-93) for the most by a U.S.-born skater over a single campaign in NHL history.

The defending “Rocket” Richard Trophy winner’s 2021-22 total leads the league. He’s also this season’s Hart Trophy favorite.

The supremely skilled center collected his 255th career goal and 448th point with his overtime marker Thursday. He’s played all six of his NHL campaigns with the Leafs, who drafted him first overall in 2016.
