The Sacramento Kings relieved Alvin Gentry from his role as interim head coach, the team announced.

Sacramento will immediately begin searching for its next bench boss, sources tell The Athletic’s Shams Charania and Sam Amick.

“The entire Kings organization is grateful for the leadership of Alvin Gentry, who stepped up when he got the call midseason. We appreciate his leadership on and off the court,” Kings general manager Monte McNair said.

Gentry took over for Luke Walton, who the Kings dismissed in November after a 6-11 start. He earned a 24-41 record in Sacramento to close out the season. Gentry, who has one year left on his contract, is discussing potentially taking on a front-office role with the Kings, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports.

Veteran coaches Mike D’Antoni, Terry Stotts, Mike Brown, and Steve Clifford are among Sacramento’s potential targets, league sources told basketball insider Marc Stein. Golden State Warriors assistant Kenny Atkinson and Milwaukee Bucks assistants Charles Lee and Darvin Ham are also expected to be considered, according to Wojnarowski.

The Kings have now employed 11 different head coaches since last qualifying for the playoffs in 2006.
