New York Mets right-hander Max Scherzer will miss the next six-to-eight weeks after imaging revealed a moderate-to-high grade internal oblique strain, the team announced Thursday.

Scherzer was forced to leave his start Wednesday with left side discomfort after throwing 87 pitches against the St. Louis Cardinals.

The 37-year-old is the latest Mets starting pitcher to be placed on the injured list, joining Jacob deGrom and Tylor Megill.

Scherzer was off to a tremendous start in his first season with New York after signing a three-year, $130-million contract, which carries an MLB record $43.3-million average annual value. The three-time Cy Young winner owns a 5-1 record with a 2.54 ERA and 59 strikeouts in 49 2/3 innings pitched.

The Mets have Chris BassittTaijuan WalkerCarlos Carrasco, and Trevor Williams currently penciled into their rotation. Left-hander David Peterson could be an option from Triple-A to replace Scherzer.

New York starters sit inside the top 10 in MLB in innings pitched (211 2/3), ERA (3.23), K/9 (8.84), and WAR (4.2), according to FanGraphs.
