The Seattle Mariners acquired left-hander Ryan Borucki from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for minor-league infielder Tyler Keenan, the club announced Saturday.

Borucki was designated for assignment by the Blue Jays earlier this week, giving the club seven days to either trade or place him on irrevocable waivers.

The Blue Jays felt he was likely to get claimed on waivers but weren’t sure if they could work out a trade for him first, Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi reports.

The 28-year-old struggled mightily this season, posting a 9.95 ERA and 11.37 K/9 in 11 relief appearances for the Blue Jays.

Borucki made his debut as a starting pitcher in 2018, authoring a strong rookie season in which he posted a 3.87 ERA across 17 starts. He finishes his Blue Jays career with an 8-9 record, 4.47 ERA, and 7.33 K/9 across 75 appearances (19 starts).

Keenan was a fourth-round pick of the Mariners in 2020 and has been patrolling third base in the minors this season. The 23-year-old owns a .250/.349/.391 slash line with three home runs and 14 RBIs.
