The Arizona Diamondbacks traded outfielder David Peralta to the Tampa Bay Rays for 19-year-old catching prospect Christian Cerda, the D-Backs announced Saturday.

Peralta, 34, is in the final season of a three-year, $22-million contract he signed prior to the 2020 campaign. The former Silver Slugger and Gold Glove winner is hitting .248/.316/.460 with 12 homers and one steal over 87 games so far this season.

Numerous Rays outfielders are currently on the injured list. Kevin Kiermaier recently underwent season-ending surgery, while Manuel Margot and Harold Ramirez are also sidelined. Additionally, Tampa Bay is without shortstop Wander Franco, as well as catchers Mike Zunino and Francisco Mejia.

Peralta will join an outfield corps consisting primarily of Randy Arozarena and Josh Lowe.

Cerda has yet to play affiliated professional baseball. He’s made 20 appearances in the Florida Complex League this year while going 17-for-54 with two homers, five steals, and 15 walks.
