The New York Yankees acquired right-hander Scott Effross from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for right-hander Hayden Wesneski on Monday, the teams announced.

Effross has been terrific for the Cubs in his two major-league seasons, authoring a 2.91 ERA and 10.4 K/9 in 62 games, with 61 of those outings coming from the bullpen.

Opposing hitters are batting just .157 and have a 30.1% whiff rate against Effross’ slider, which he throws 40% of the time.

“He’s got weapons to get right-handed hitters and left-handed hitters out,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said, according to NJ.com’s Brendan Kuty.

Boone added that Effross could be used in “any kind of big situation” after he joins the team.

The sidearmer joins a Yankees bullpen composed of Clay HolmesAroldis Chapman, and Jonathan Loaisiga, among others, but New York is missing Michael KingZack BrittonMiguel Castro, and Chad Green.

Effross is under club control for five years and hasn’t hit arbitration as of yet.

Wesneski, 24, was selected in the sixth round of the 2019 draft by the Yankees. He rose through their farm system after a stellar college career at Sam Houston State, pitching his 2022 campaign in Triple-A with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

He owns a 3.51 ERA and 1.15 WHIP in 89 2/3 innings across 19 starts this season.

MLB Pipeline ranked him as New York’s No. 7 prospect.
