The St. Louis Cardinals acquired left-hander Jordan Montgomery from the New York Yankees for Gold Glove outfielder Harrison Bader and a player to be named later or cash, the teams announced Tuesday.

Montgomery authored a 3.69 ERA with 1.09 WHIP over 21 starts (114 2/3 innings) with the Yankees this season. However, the 29-year-old became expendable when New York traded for right-hander Frankie Montas.

The lifelong Yankees hurler is arbitration-eligible through 2023.

“I’m pretty shocked. This is my family. This is all I know,” an emotional Montgomery said, according to Sweeny Murti of WFAN.

Meanwhile, Bader, who’s currently sidelined with plantar fasciitis, has gone deep five times with 15 stolen bases over 72 games for the Cardinals during the 2022 campaign. He can test free agency after next season.

Bader, 28, amassed a defensive rating of 46 during his six-year career, according to FanGraphs.
