Dallas Cowboys left tackle Tyron Smith suffered an avulsion fracture in his knee at practice Wednesday evening, sources told NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Smith will reportedly require surgery as the hamstring tendon in the back of his knee tore off the bone. He’s expected to be out until at least December.

Smith suffered the ailment while trying to block Leighton Vander Esch on a running play, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Todd Archer.

An eight-time Pro Bowler, Smith has been one of the NFL’s best left tackles throughout his career but has struggled with durability. The 31-year-old hasn’t played a full season since 2015. He missed six games in 2021 due to an ankle injury and COVID-19.

The Cowboys have a number of internal options to replace Smith, though none are established starters. First-round rookie Tyler Smith, who’s played left guard this preseason, and second-year lineman Josh Ball are the most likely candidates to fill in at left tackle. Aviante Collins and Matt Waletzko are also options.

Veteran Eric Fisher is the most notable left tackle still available in free agency.
