Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott is expected to be out six-to-eight weeks following surgery on his throwing hand due to an injury suffered in Sunday night’s loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, sources told ESPN’s Todd Archer.

Prescott, who sustained a fracture near his thumb, underwent successful surgery Monday to address the ailment, a source told NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

The signal-caller collided hands with a Buccaneers defender while attempting a pass late in the fourth quarter. He jogged to the locker room to get X-rays after having his hand looked at on the sideline.

Backup quarterback Cooper Rush will presumably start for Dallas until Prescott is ready to return. The 28-year-old’s only career start came last season when he threw for 325 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception in a win over the Minnesota Vikings.

Prescott and the Cowboys’ offense sputtered in prime time, scoring just three points. The quarterback threw for just 134 yards and zero touchdowns against one interception.

Prescott didn’t miss a game in the first four seasons of his NFL career. But he missed 11 games in 2020 with an ankle injury and one game last season with a calf strain.
