Ring of Honor’s Death Before Dishonor pay-per-view kicked off with a new ROH World Champion.

AEW star and Blackpool Combat Club member Claudio Castagnoli defeated Jonathan Gresham to become the new ROH World Champion.

This win marks Claudio Castagnoli’s first ROH World Title reign. During his first run with ROH, Castagnoli held the ROH World Tag Team Championship twice with Chris Hero.

Before losing the title tonight, Gresham had been the champion since defeating Jay Lethal at Final Battle in December 2021.

Ring of Honor World Champion Jonathan Gresham now knows who he will face at the Death Before Dishonor pay-per-view, and it’s a big name from ROH’s past.

It was announced during Friday night’s episode of “AEW Rampage” that Claudio Castagnoli will get the title shot against Gresham. Castagnoli confronted Gresham earlier in the episode after Gresham’s successfully defended his title against Lee Moriarty.

Gresham boasted he would be appearing on AEW programming every week going forward. He vowed to outclass and outwrestle all of the favorites of the AEW audience. Gresham declared himself “the best hold-for-hold wrestler in the world”. Gresham’s new manager Tully Blanchard continued to hype up his client until they were interrupted by Castagnoli.

Castagnoli wrestled in Ring of Honor between 2005 and 2011. He won the ROH World Tag Team Championship on two occasions with his longtime partner Chris Hero as The Kings of Wrestling. However, singles gold eluded Castagnoli in ROH.

Castagnoli spent more than a decade in WWE before leaving the company after his contract expired earlier this year. He made his AEW debut as the newest member of the Blackpool Combat Club at the Forbidden Door pay-per-view as the surprised opponent for Zack Sabre Jr. Filling in for the injured Bryan Danielson, Castagnoli got the win.

Just days later, Castagnoli forced Matt Menard to submit to the Sharpshooter to win the Blood & Guts match between the BCC and the Jericho Appreciation Society. Castagnoli scored another win in AEW on this past Wednesday’s “Dynamite” when he defeated Jake Hager.

Gresham has held the ROH World Championship for more than 200 days. His trajectory took an unexpected turn during last Friday’s episode of “Rampage” when he turned on Moriarty during a tag team match and revealed himself as the newest member of Tully Blanchard Enterprises. The stable also includes Brian Cage and the recently formed tag team Gates of Agony: Toa Liona and Kaun.

FTR shocked wrestling fans by issuing a challenge to Ring of Honor Hall of Famers The Briscoes for an ROH World Tag Team Championship rematch at ROH Death Before Dishonor later this month. It took less than 24 hours for The Briscoes to respond to the champs, which they did on Twitter the only way Jay and Mark Briscoe know how.

“CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!!!!” Jay Briscoe tweeted. “Now shine our belts up, bitches.”

Jay’s tweet also included a video featuring him and Mark talking about FTR’s challenge, as well as other things going on in the brothers’ lives, all while Mark poured some Nesquick chocolate syrup into his drink. Much like in the tweet, the Briscoes ended the promo by accepting the challenge and telling FTR that “Dem Boys were back in the house.”

It has been a little over three months since FTR and the Briscoes collided at ROH Supercard of Honor on April 1, in a match that many fans, pundits, and FTR themselves considered one of the best of the year (something the Briscoes alluded to in the video above). FTR ultimately emerged victorious to win the ROH Championships for the first time, ending the Briscoes’ 12th reign as champions. Both teams were attacked afterward by the Young Bucks, setting up a match between the Bucks and FTR for the ROH and AAA Tag Titles on “AEW Dynamite”, which was won by FTR.

As of this writing, an FTR-Briscoes match has not yet been officially announced for ROH Death Before Dishonor, though the Briscoes accepting the challenge seems to all but confirm it. It’s also unknown whether this means the Briscoes will be joining ROH following Death Before Dishonor or if this is a one-off; it had been reported months ago that AEW and ROH owner Tony Khan was unable to sign the Briscoes due to concerns from Warner Brothers Discovery over past comments made by Jay Briscoe years ago.
